Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has dismissed concerns that former Anambra State Governor and NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, poses a threat to President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Umahi made the statement while appearing on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he described Obi as his brother and friend.
The minister said his position on integrating the Southeast into Nigeria’s political mainstream had remained unchanged since his time as governor of Ebonyi State.
He recalled that during the 2019 presidential election, he publicly urged people in the Southeast to support then-President Muhammadu Buhari, while personally backing Atiku Abubakar with 75 percent support in Ebonyi State.
Umahi maintained that Obi was not the only presidential candidate from the Southeast, noting that three other candidates from the region were also contesting the 2027 election.
“Peter Obi is not a threat to APC. Talk is cheap and I’m saying what we are doing,” Umahi said.
He challenged presidential aspirants seeking to lead Nigeria to demonstrate their records of development in the communities and positions they previously occupied.
The minister stressed that his assessment was based on practical achievements rather than political rhetoric.
