Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is mourning the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who passed away on Monday while receiving medical treatment in Zanzibar.
The death of Tanzania’s First Gentleman was announced by Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi, who disclosed that Ameir died at about 8 a.m. local time at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.
According to the Vice-President, Ameir had been battling a heart condition before his death.
Ndejembi also announced that funeral arrangements were being made in Kizimkazi, a village in Zanzibar.
Ameir, an agricultural academic, maintained a largely private life and made few public appearances alongside his wife during official engagements.
He became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman following Samia’s assumption of office as president in March 2021.
The couple married in 1978, before Samia ventured into national politics, and had four children—three sons and a daughter.
Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is also involved in politics and serves in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.
