The Abia State Government has announced progress towards restoring up to 50 megawatts of grid electricity to the Aba Ring-Fenced Area, while advancing plans to secure an alternative gas supply for the Geometric Power plant.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Ministry of Power and Public Utilities and signed by the Commissioner, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday.
According to the ministry, recent engagements involving Geometric Power Aba Limited (GPAL), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) have resulted in progress on both initiatives.
The proposed 50MW grid supply is expected to serve as a backup source during emergencies and strengthen the electricity system’s capacity to meet growing demand from industries, businesses and households across Aba and surrounding communities.
The government stressed that a reliable electricity system requires multiple sources of supply. It said, in collaboration with Geometric Power, NDPHC and other stakeholders, progress had also been made towards securing an alternative gas arrangement for the Geometric Power plant.
The alternative gas supply is intended to reduce dependence on a single source and minimise disruptions to power generation.
The state government described the initiatives as important to sustaining the growth of Aba’s industrial and commercial economy, as well as supporting the broader development agenda of the Alex Otti administration.
The ministry said discussions were ongoing with federal agencies, electricity sector operators, gas suppliers and other stakeholders to conclude the technical, commercial and regulatory requirements necessary for a more resilient power supply system.
The government thanked electricity consumers for their patience and commended Geometric Power, NISO and NDPHC for their cooperation.
It also pledged to provide further updates as work on the projects progresses.
The Abia State Government reaffirmed its commitment to developing a stable, reliable and sustainable electricity system capable of supporting industrialisation, job creation, investment and improved living standards across the state.
