The Abia State Government is set to hold a Solemn Assembly and Covenant Renewal Service this week as part of efforts to seek divine guidance for the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and Coordinator of the programme, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, disclosed this while announcing the initiative, themed “Remembering the Covenant.”
According to him, the programme is aimed at thanking God for His faithfulness to Abia and renewing the state’s commitment to the covenant made with God following the emergence of the present administration.
Nwachukwu recalled that Abia had previously faced negative national attention over reports of political leaders being taken to shrines for allegiance, saying the state became associated with poor governance and underdevelopment before the emergence of Governor Alex Otti.
He also recalled the celebrations that followed Otti’s declaration as governor, as well as the subsequent seven-day fasting and prayer programme coordinated by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN).
The spiritual exercise culminated in the rededication of the state to God at Ngwa High School, Aba, where the new leadership entered into a covenant with God.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said the Solemn Assembly was conceived based on the administration’s desire to continue seeking God’s guidance and commit the affairs of Abia into His hands.
Kanu noted that the initiative was particularly significant as political campaigns and other activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gradually gather momentum.
