US President Donald Trump has instructed the Pentagon to “substantially reduce” joint military exercises with South Korea, citing the cost of the drills and his desire to maintain what he described as a “very good relationship” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump also criticised Seoul for declining to participate in US efforts against Iran, saying South Korea had recently refused a request to join the US in the “denuclearisation” of Iran. He argued that the military exercises send an inappropriate and hostile signal to North Korea.

🇰🇷 South Korea Responds

South Korea’s government said it was reviewing Trump’s comments while maintaining that the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises would proceed as scheduled. The 11-day drills began on Monday and involve about 18,000 South Korean troops.

Seoul also expressed hope that Trump’s relationship with Kim Jong Un could eventually help create an opportunity for meaningful dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang.

⚠️ Security Concerns

The decision comes at a sensitive time. North Korea has recently conducted ballistic missile tests and continues expanding its nuclear and missile capabilities. US and South Korean officials have also raised concerns over North Korean military cooperation with Russia in the Ukraine war.

Security experts warn that reducing joint exercises could affect military readiness and weaken deterrence against North Korea, while the potential diplomatic benefits remain uncertain.
