British singer and rapper Khyra Wilson, popularly known as Kwn, has revealed that she is of Nigerian and Irish descent, dispelling the widespread belief that she is Jamaican.
The singer explained that her strong connection to Jamaican and Caribbean culture stems from the environment in which she was raised and the cultural influences that shaped her music.
Speaking on the Culture podcast, Kwn disclosed that her father is Nigerian, while her mother is Irish.
The “Worst Behaviour” hitmaker said many people are surprised when she identifies as Nigerian because of the Caribbean influences evident in her sound and style.
“I am half-Nigerian. Everyone thinks I am Jamaican but I am not. I grew up around Caribbean culture so people assume I am from the Caribbean,” she said.
Kwn noted that people rarely associate her with Nigeria when trying to guess her background, adding that only recently did someone correctly identify her Nigerian heritage.
She also revealed that she has never visited Nigeria but expressed confidence that she would be warmly welcomed whenever she makes the trip.
“People find it difficult if I tell them I am Nigerian. Nobody has ever guessed that I am Nigerian until recently when someone guessed it. Everyone thinks I am Caribbean,” she said.
“But I have never been to Nigeria before. I know they are going to love me when I go over there,” she added.
