The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike over alleged failure by the institution to implement the Federal Government-ASUU agreement signed in December 2025.
The branch chairman, Professor Omeh Obasi Ngwoke, said the industrial action was also triggered by what the union described as alleged illegalities within the university.
Ngwoke said the union had engaged the university management several times and remained patient while awaiting the full payment of outstanding salaries in line with directives from the Federal Government.
According to him, the continued withholding of the salaries had left the union with no option but to commence an indefinite local strike.
“What we are being owed is far greater than what we receive; we just have to resolute the revolution of Congress, so we have activated indefinite local strike in the University of Port Harcourt,” Ngwoke said.
The ASUU chairman also expressed concern over the financial hardship allegedly facing members of the union, claiming that some lecturers had lost their lives amid the prolonged non-payment of salaries.
He said the union would sustain the industrial action until the university management addresses its demands and complies with relevant Federal Government orders and directives.
The development is expected to affect academic activities at the institution until an agreement is reached between the university management and the striking lecturers.
