AC Milan midfielder and Croatian football legend, Luka Modrić, has expressed his intention to return to Real Madrid in the future, describing the Spanish giants as his home.
Modrić departed Real Madrid as a free agent in the summer of 2024 after an illustrious spell with the club. He subsequently joined AC Milan, where he continues to play, but has revealed that he hopes to eventually make a return to Madrid.
“Real Madrid is my home and I’d like to come back one day,” Modrić said.
The Croatian midfielder enjoyed a highly successful career at Real Madrid, establishing himself as one of the club’s most influential midfielders during his time in Spain.
Meanwhile, former Real Madrid manager José Mourinho, who was in charge when Modrić joined the club in 2012, recalled the difficulties involved in completing the transfer from Tottenham Hotspur.
Mourinho said negotiations with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy were particularly challenging, with the deal repeatedly appearing close to completion before being delayed.
“Signing Modrić in 2012? It was practically impossible to negotiate with Daniel Levy’s Tottenham,” Mourinho recalled.
He explained that despite the uncertainty surrounding the transfer, Real Madrid were determined to sign the Croatian because of his exceptional quality and versatility in midfield.
Mourinho also recalled facing criticism from journalists after bringing Modrić to Madrid, with some describing the transfer as one of the club’s worst signings.
However, he noted that Modrić eventually silenced his critics through his performances on the pitch.
“You guys attacked me for signing him for months, calling him the worst signing in Madrid history, and then he closed every mouth,” Mourinho said with a laugh.
