The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from office amid reported moves by lawmakers to remove him through impeachment proceedings.
Agbebaku’s resignation was confirmed on Monday, August 17, by his media aide, Ivy Ebojele, who announced the development on Facebook and said further details would be released later.
The development has triggered a fresh leadership change in the Edo legislature. Hon. Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, has emerged as the new Speaker and was sworn in following Agbebaku’s exit.
Reports indicate that the resignation came after a significant number of lawmakers backed moves to impeach Agbebaku, although the full circumstances surrounding his decision are still emerging.
Agbebaku had served as Speaker since 2023.
