Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will resign from office if President Bola Tinubu loses the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election.
Wike made the declaration while addressing members of the Apo Traders Association in Abuja, stressing that his performance as FCT Minister should translate into electoral support for Tinubu in the territory.
The former Rivers State governor said his support for Tinubu cuts across party lines, noting that some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are also backing the President.
“We are doing rainbow coalition. Even people in the PDP, we are supporting Tinubu, right?” Wike said.
Wike described the FCT as his place of work and Rivers State as his home, arguing that he should take responsibility if Tinubu fails to secure both areas.
He said losing either the FCT or Rivers would raise questions about his performance and his continued relevance as minister.
According to him, he would announce his resignation immediately after the presidential election if Tinubu loses both areas.
“The presidential election is on January 16, 2027. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” Wike said.
INEC has scheduled the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027.
This latest declaration comes amid Wike’s continued public campaign for Tinubu’s re-election, despite remaining a member of the opposition PDP.
