The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned legal practitioners against charging clients in foreign currencies, saying lawyers found engaging in the practice could face prosecution.
The warning was issued by the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, ACE I Bawa Usman Kaltungo, on Friday, September 11, 2026.
Kaltungo spoke when he received a delegation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Task Force on Illegal Practice of Law during a courtesy visit to his office in Lagos.
The delegation was led by the task force’s Head, Moshood Abiola.
During the meeting, the EFCC official expressed concern over what he described as illegal and unethical practices allegedly being carried out by some members of the legal profession.
Kaltungo specifically warned lawyers who charge their clients in foreign currencies, stressing that the commission would take action against anyone found violating the law.
“The Commission would not hesitate to prosecute anyone found culpable,” he said.
The EFCC urged legal practitioners to adhere to professional and legal standards in their dealings with clients, warning that violations could attract enforcement action.
