The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed 14 new cases of Lassa fever, bringing the country’s cumulative number of confirmed infections to 1,035.

The latest figures were contained in the agency’s Week 33 Lassa fever situation report released in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the NCDC, the new infections were recorded between August 10 and 16 across Bauchi, Benue, Ondo and Edo states.

The agency also reported 252 deaths from the disease, pushing the case fatality rate (CFR) to 24.4 per cent. This is higher than the 18.6 per cent CFR recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.

The 14 new infections represent an increase from the four cases recorded in epidemiological Week 32, when Ondo and Edo states reported confirmed cases.

At the end of Week 32, the country had recorded 1,021 confirmed infections and 240 deaths, with a case fatality rate of 23.5 per cent.

The NCDC noted that weekly transmission has continued to fluctuate, pointing out that the Week 32 figure was a decline from the 17 confirmed cases reported during Week 31.

By epidemiological Week 33, a total of 23 states had reported at least one confirmed Lassa fever case across 117 Local Government Areas.

With Lassa fever continuing to pose a significant public health challenge in affected parts of the country, the NCDC said it would sustain surveillance and response efforts aimed at monitoring and containing the spread of the disease.

The agency also urged continued vigilance and adherence to appropriate public health measures as authorities work to reduce the impact of Lassa fever across the country.
