The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has explained why he attended the launch of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential campaign office in Abuja.
Obi gave the explanation in a post on his verified X handle on Tuesday, saying his attendance was driven by his commitment to promoting a new Nigeria built on unity, love, justice, mutual respect and inclusion.
The former Anambra State governor said such values were particularly important as political contests could easily become divisive and unnecessarily hostile.
Obi maintained that Nigerian politicians should ensure their shared commitment to the country remains stronger than their political differences.
He also called on presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 election to focus their campaigns on practical ideas and solutions to the challenges confronting Nigerians.
According to him, issues such as insecurity, poverty, hunger, inequality and the increasing number of children out of school should form part of the central issues in the political debate.
“Let us compete on ideas that will unite our people, improve their lives, and restore hope to our nation, while maintaining respect, decency, and love for one another,” Obi wrote.
He congratulated Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and other leaders and members of the APM on the launch of the campaign office.
Obi said the occasion represented an opportunity for political actors to demonstrate that differences in political affiliation should not prevent them from working toward a better Nigeria.
