The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate closure of illegal car dealership lots operating on parks, gardens and other designated green areas across Abuja.

Wike also directed the FCT Administration to intensify monitoring of the affected locations to prevent them from being converted to uses contrary to their original purposes.

The directive was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.

According to the statement, Wike expressed concern over the conversion of recreational spaces into car dealerships, citing the Millennium Park and other similar areas as examples.

The minister said the enforcement was part of the administration’s broader efforts to tackle flooding and restore the proper use of designated green spaces within the Federal Capital City.

Wike consequently ordered the establishment of a task force to monitor the affected areas and ensure strict compliance with the directive.

The minister also ordered an investigation into civil servants allegedly involved in granting approvals for the illegal use of green areas as car dealership lots.

Officials from the Departments of Parks and Recreation, Environmental Protection, Traffic Management and Urban Affairs have reportedly been summoned to explain their roles in the alleged approvals.
