Nigerians have taken to social media to express disappointment and frustration following the Super Eagles’ 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifying match on Tuesday.
Nigeria suffered the heavy defeat at the 24 de Setembro National Stadium in Bissau, with Guinea-Bissau dominating the scoreline.
Franculino Djú opened the scoring for the hosts in the first half after receiving an assist from Renato Nhaga.
Mama Baldé extended Guinea-Bissau’s lead in the 65th minute, before Álvaro Djaló completed the rout with a stoppage-time goal.
Following the result, several Nigerian football fans criticised the team’s performance, with some questioning the form and selection of certain players.
Some reactions gathered by BidLinesTV on X include:
@akwaibomdaily: “The only serious footballer in the Super Eagles is Bassey. Nwabali, Bruno, Moses and Ajayi are very unserious players.”
@_AbiolaPharays: “It is the duty of the Super Eagles to always make us sad. It isn’t time to bring our calculators out because there are still matches to play.”
@Habatovation1: “It’s not by FIFA ranking but by quality football. Again, this is to remind you that the current Super Eagles can’t produce anything. Super chicken.”
@BukolaOfGod: “Super Eagles have some of the best players in the top leagues in the world, yet they always perform woefully when it comes to playing for Nigeria. What exactly is going on?”
Other fans called for changes to the squad and questioned the performances of several players, including goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and forward Ademola Lookman.
@sportingshina wrote: “Most times, Super Eagles coaches take the blame for poor performances, but I think it’s high time the players were held accountable too for consistently failing to give their best in national colours.”
The defeat has intensified criticism of the Super Eagles as they continue their campaign for qualification for the 2027 AFCON.
